CHAPTER 14

The first thing Erin told Lloyd as they left the house was that they should take separate vehicles. “It’s not that I’m being picky, but I have two ranches to run, and I’m not always over at the Broken Wheel as I’m needed here. I’m going to take you by to show you the cabins. You’re more than welcome to stay at the house, and no offense, but eventually, you’ll move into one of them.”

“No offense taken,” Lloyd said. “Why don’t I check out what you have, and I can move in after work tonight.”

“You might want to have supper with us at the main house,” Erin said as she headed to her truck. “It’s our monthly dinner where we all get together. This month Opal and Pru are cooking.”

“Do you know what?” Lloyd asked, and looked at Reid. “I don’t know if you noticed, but I’ve lost some weight. With not sleeping, I’ve found my appetite is non-existent also.”

“I noticed, but didn’t want to say anything. You look almost like you did when we came back from Operation Gold Rush.”

“Yeah, about ten pounds less than then.”

“I thought so.” They climbed into their trucks and made a convoy of going over the land. Lloyd liked that they were driving into the sunrise. He only hoped the cabin had a porch and he could sit and watch it before starting work. His favorite time of day was the sunrise. It proved that he had made it through the night, and with the sun rising, he could accomplish anything. Or at least that was what he told himself. He whistled when Erin pulled her truck in front of a cabin and Reid parked beside her. As the other two got out, Lloyd continued to sit there and stare in shock at the sheer size of the building.

“Is this the cabin?”

“Yes,” Reid laughed as he opened Lloyd’s door. “This one is furnished with all the small appliances. The other one isn’t yet.”

“I don’t understand.”

“I moved into this one when I first arrived. Before I moved in with Erin. Anyway, there weren’t any groceries, and there still aren’t, but there is coffee, so you might want to wait until there’s some food in the house before you move in. A couple of days shouldn’t hurt anything. Anyway, when I moved in, there wasn’t a coffee pot, toaster, microwave, nothing. Just a stove with an oven, and a refrigerator, with a freezer.”

“Got it.” Lloyd nodded as he exited and looked around. The first thing he did was walk around the entire outside of the building, and sighed in relief when he spotted a large screened-in porch on the back side of the house. He couldn’t wait to have his morning coffee there to watch the sun come up. He paused with his hands on his hips and looked around. Both Reid and Erin came up to him. “What’s that?”

“Those are the single cabins we told you about. The ladies all live in them. Each one has their own.
